Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron
Ubuntu is an entirely open source operating system built around the Linux kernel. The Ubuntu community is built around the ideals enshrined in the Ubuntu Philosophy: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customize and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.
As some might know, I’ve been switching to and from Linux distros for quite some time now. I’ve tried Fedora (8 and 9), openSUSE (10.2 and 10.3), and ubuntu (7.04, 7.10, and 8.04). Nothing really grabbed my attention enough except that I wasn’t getting impressive results and I wasn’t easily adapting to any of them.. until I upgraded to ubuntu 8.04 last night, installed compiz, and getting my wireless network card to work with the least effort possible.
Knowing that Linux is the kind of thing you need to constantly be dealing with to know how to deal with, and given that I hadn’t spent any time on Linux for like.. 4 months now - if anyone (even my 10 year old brother) is reading this post and has had enough of Windows alright, I am absolutely recommending ubuntu 8.04.
I’ll try to post some tips and tricks soon if I have enough time, but even though, ubuntu is just one amazing operating system - and it’s terribly fast!
